Purpose other than protection
Following the discovery of the code number, shearing resumed under police supervision. With each cut of the blade, an unnatural resistance returned—something impossible during normal shearing. It was clearly unlike animal hair, possessing an unnatural hardness as if it were encasing something inside. Watching the police officers silently continue taking notes, Peter began to realize. Their purpose had never been the protection of the sheep.
