The gaze that looks into the “middle”

As the shearing progressed, the sheep’s movements grew increasingly sluggish. There was no sign of struggle; rather, it seemed as though it was quietly enduring something. To Peter, this behavior felt unnatural. His unease turned to certainty when he noticed one of the police officers staring intently not at the sheep itself, but at the “inside” of its wool. From the very beginning, they had been looking at the “contents” hidden beneath the sheep’s skin.
