As the trial continued, Ellen’s life fell apart, and when she was three months behind on her rent, the electricity was shut off. At night, the apartment was dark and the children were wrapped in blankets. The refrigerator is empty, with only canned food from the food bank, Ryan coughs a small cough, and Sophia snuggles in without saying a word.
