The following week, Ellen was summoned to the police station, and in the interrogation room, the detective asked her where her real mother was and when and where she got the children. When Ellen answered, “I gave birth to them, in a hospital,” the detective’s gaze sharpened, saying, “I have the birth certificates, but the DNA denies it.” Ellen began to doubt her memory.
